    Hello to all Leiza Michaels & Starburst Records fans!

    Leiza and Starburst are so excited to announce the release of StarburstRecord's latest album called Leiza Michaels, New Standards, now available here on Bandcamp in CD or digital format!

    Our personal favorite genres of music are Jazz Standards and The Great American Songbook. We love artists like Frank Sinatra, Toni Bennett and more recently Diana Krall and Michael Bublé. We also love music from the old 1940’s Broadway musicals by such writers as Cole Porter, George Gershwin, Richard Rodgers and many others.

    So, in this album, Leiza and Starburst have drawn upon our collective knowledge & memories of this style of songwriting, frequently infused with an introduction setting the stage before going into the full body of the song. Together we tasked ourselves with emulating this style in this new album. We both hope you enjoy the results.

On the surface this may be perceived as a love song, but somewhat subtly lurking between the lines, the singer is expressing not only her deep love and affection for her partner, but also anguish over mistreatment. "Charm me, you don't have to harm me" and "Hold me, you don't have to scold me" allow the listener some insight into what's really going on here. Unfortunately, the level of spousal abuse throughout the world is significant and often women have a history of going from one abusive relationship into another, always believing the abuse will stop...but it never does. This song was written as if it takes place in the 1930's - 1940's where this kind of situation was more hidden and more tolerated. Today, thank God, with the educational results of the #MeToo movement and overall societal advancement, support systems are more readily available to extract oneself from such a nasty situation. Still, it is far to frequent that a person finds themselves in a relationship of truly loving yet being abused by a significant other.
